Personal Tax FAQ
Find answers to common questions about personal tax filing, deductions, deadlines, and more.
When is the deadline to file my personal tax return in Canada?
For most individuals, the deadline is April 30. If you or your spouse/common-law partner are self-employed, the filing deadline is June 15; however, any taxes owing are still due by April 30 to avoid interest charges.
What documents do I need to file my personal taxes?
Common documents include: T4 (employment income), T5 (investment income), T3 (trust income), RRSP contribution slips, Tuition slips (T2202), Medical expense receipts, Childcare receipts, and Rent or property tax information (if applicable). If you are unsure, we provide a personalized checklist.
I just moved to Canada. Do I need to file a tax return?
Yes, in most cases. Filing your first return establishes your residency for tax purposes, triggers benefit eligibility, and starts your contribution history. We also help determine your official residency start date, which affects benefits.
How do I know if I qualify for GST/HST credit?
Eligibility depends on residency status, income level, marital status, and number of children. Filing your tax return is required to calculate and issue the credit.
What happens if I file late?
If you owe taxes and file late, the CRA may charge a late-filing penalty and daily interest on the balance owing. Delays in filing can also interrupt benefit payments.
Can you help if I missed previous years?
Yes. We assist with late-filed returns, CRA notices, payment arrangements, and voluntary disclosures. It is generally better to correct filings proactively.
Do I need to report foreign income?
Yes. Canadian residents must report worldwide income, even if earned outside Canada. Newcomers often have foreign income considerations, and we provide guidance on foreign tax credits and reporting foreign assets if applicable.
How long does it take to receive my refund?
After electronic filing, most refunds are issued within two weeks. Paper returns may take eight weeks or longer. Direct deposit is recommended. If you have not set up a direct deposit, please notify us.
How much do you charge for personal tax returns?
Fees depend on complexity, including number of slips, investment income, self-employment income, foreign income, and rental income. We provide transparent pricing before filing.
What happens if CRA audits me?
If the Canada Revenue Agency selects your return for review, we can guide you through the process, explain requested documentation, and help prepare a response.
How do I update my address or marital status with CRA?
Filing your return updates CRA records, but you can also update online through CRA My Account. Changes in marital status can affect benefits and tax credits.
Do I need to pay installments?
Some taxpayers with significant income not subject to withholding (e.g., self-employment or investment income) may need to make quarterly tax installment payments. We review your situation and advise if installments are required.
